It’s hard to believe that the conclusion of another lacrosse season is only two weeks away. Selection Sunday is set for May 7th meaning that teams will be wrapping up their conference schedules within the next 14 days. In the post below, we take a look at what the brackets would look like if the postseason were to start tomorrow.
How the Playoffs Work:
In Colorado, lacrosse is split up into the 4A and 5A divisions, each with their own playoff tournament. Each division uses the same process to fill the 16-team tournament. First, the qualifiers will be determined by May 6th. Any team that is crowned a league champion gets an automatic bid into the state tournament. From there, the other 10 (4A) or 11 (5A) qualifiers will be determined by RPI Rankings (click here for current rankings). Once the qualifiers are determined, a selection committee will assign seeds and set up the bracket. The committee will not set up first round games between two teams in the same league. They will also take geography into consideration.
Here is what we predict the 4A bracket will look like:
As you can see, Dawson is on track to earn the number one seed in this year’s tournament while Valor will take the number two spot. One thing to notice is the number of teams from the Western Slope that are set to qualify this year as Aspen, Durango, Steamboat Springs, Vail Mountain, and Summit will all qualify based on RPI.

Here is what we predict the 5A bracket will look like:
Cherry Creek takes the top-seed in our 5A bracket while Mountain Vista comes in at number 2. Expect for the top-5 seeds to stay the same for the next two weeks, but there will be a lot of movement in the rest of the field. As more teams complete more games, the RPI standings will shift dramatically.
