With today’s 14-9 victory, the Pioneers once again proved they know how to close out games.
Denver never trailed in today’s victory, but they sure came close on multiple occasions. The Pioneers’ defense held Duke scoreless throughout the first quarter. However, the Blue Devils battled back in the second and trailed by only one goal headed into halftime.
The third quarter was yet another defensive battle as Denver had to fight to maintain its one goal advantage. Riding a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth, Denver’s offense knew it had to find a rhythm and finish the Blue Devils. After Duke tied the game at eight goals apiece, the Pioneers’ offense exploded and scored three unanswered goals to make it an 11-8 game heading into the final three minutes of play. With the Blue Devils running out of steam, Denver scored three more points before the game ended and escaped with a 14-9 victory.
Connor Cannizzaro led the team in scoring with four goals and one assist to his name. With his goal in the second quarter, Cannizzaro recorded his 200th career point for the University of Denver (134 goals, 66 assists). At the faceoff-X, Trevor Baptiste won 17 of 25 faceoffs. Freshman-phenom Ethan Walker recorded his second straight hat trick in just as many games as the Pioneers defeated the 16th ranked team in the country.
The announced attendance at today’s game was 2,642 people, making it the 7th largest crowd in DU history. Today also marked the Pioneers’ 15th straight sellout.
